FLY SHEET - KODA

HORSE: Koda, 9yrs, Mustang gelding gathered in 2020 at 7yrs old from Eagle, NV.
SITUATION: Fear of novel objects, especially anything touching his body.
GOAL: Koda willingly engages with and allows me to dress him in a fly sheet. He will calmly accept the the feeling of the fly sheet making all-over contact with his body, at liberty with freedom to leave, without any tension or flight response.

Summary & Conclusion

After 2 weeks of daily 10-20 minute sessions, we accomplished our case study goal.

I feel really good about the outcome and am so proud of Koda, especially seeing as there were a few times when he regressed and I wondered if were going to accomplish the goal.  It required me to think about creative ways to continue making forward progress without tipping him over threshold and losing ground. For Koda, who is extremely sensitive to touch, fearful of being trapped and restrained, and scared of novel objects, the fly sheet represented multiple fears for him.

This video marks the final session of the fly sheet training. I fastened all the straps then asked him to walk around a bit to get used to the feeling of it on his body.
